With twenty years of experience in the publishing world (Algonquin Books, Graywolf Press, Lookout Books, Great Minds PBC, and more!), I offer three types of editing services to ensure that your work is treated with the greatest care and professionalism, all while respecting your artistic creativity. The types of books I proofread/edit are: literary novels or novellas, historical fiction, young adult, short story collections, memoirs, university press books, academic works.

I do not use AI or Chat GPT in any of my proofreading or editing work. I just use my very human brain. 🙂

I will not edit work that has used AI or Chat GPT in its creation.

Manuscript Eval

A Manuscript Eval is a complete read-through of the manuscript. It includes the following:

  • A response (a letter over 5 pages) in which I detail the strengths of your manuscript, and address the areas I believe could be strengthened.
  • I address elements such as characters, themes, plot, pacing, dialogue, and narrative POV.
  • The response is to help you get to where you want your story to be!
  • This will not include copyediting or revisions. It is merely a guide to tell you what is working and what is making me pause during my reading. Think of it like a lighthouse!

Line Editing

Line Editing is like being a surgeon to your manuscript. It includes the following:

  • Checking for correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Using an in-house style guide along with the Chicago Manual of Style for proper places, hyphenation, and terms.
  • Editing dialogue or narration that does not seem to accentuate or flow with the author’s intended desire for the story’s goal. (Fair warning, this can be heavy!)

Proofreading

Proofreading is when your manuscript is in the last possible stage before going to print, and you need someone with fresh eyes to review the manuscript. It includes the following:

  • Typos, grammatical errors or copyediting issues, inconsistent fonts, inconsistent character or paragraph styles, margin errors, header and footer errors.
  • Creation of a style guide for your manuscript.
  • The goal of proofreading is to make sure the manuscript is as perfect as it can be!

Rates

Here are my rates for Manuscript Evals, Line Editing, and Proofreading:

  • Manuscript Eval: $0.025 per word
  • Line Editing: $0.025 per word
  • Proofreading: $35 per hour
